Newsletter 58 – January 2024

2024 LET’S GO! YALLAH! ANDIAMO!

Le Carré des Lombes begins 2024 by celebrating new projects and intercultural contexts that mobilize us in a whole new way. Six months of artistically and humanly rich activities, bringing together more than 20 artists from Quebec, Morocco and Italy.

A new work is underway

The month of February will be devoted to a major new wok by an exceptional artistic team. A series of creative laboratories began last summer in the magnificent studios of Département de danse de l’UQAM and will continue in various locations until the unveiling of the work and its artists in spring 2025.

Montréal-Marrakech

Premiered as part of the Montpellier Danse Festival last June, MONTRÉAL-MARRAKECH, a co-creation by Danièle Desnoyers and Taoufiq Izeddiou, will finally be performed in Marrakech in March, where the project was initiated in 2018. As part of the On Marche, Festival International De Danse Contemporaine à Marrakech, the creation will be adapted for outdoor use at an iconic venue in the city.

Just prior to this, excerpts will be presented as part of RIDEAU‘s official selection on February 12. Performances in Quebec will take place during the 2024-2025 season.

COMPAGNONNAGE 24

The 4th edition of the Compagnonnage project will take place in April. Emerging artists dedicated to choreographic writing will be paired with performers of their choice for intensive creation periods. Other artists will follow the progress of Le Carré des Lombes’s new creation, taking part in rehearsals and periods of conceptualization. Depending on the content of their work, these artists will receive a form of support of their choice, whether artistic, administrative, technical or simply supportive. One thing is for sure, this project helps to break down the isolation between artists, and encourages intergenerational dialogue.

NATURE AND LANDSCAPE

Initiated in 2020, the SCENOGRAPHIES-PAYSAGESSCENOGRAPHIES-PAYSAGES cycle continues. Following on from the magnificent Jardins de Métis, this time Sardinia will play host to an artistic proposal by Danièle Desnoyers in environments as diverse as an olive grove or an archaeological site. Located from the north to the south of the island, each site will host the presence of six dance artists in resonance with their environment.

A true intercultural encounter, this project brings together artists from Quebec and Sardinia. Preparatory work will take place in the Montreal area in the presence of the Italian artists, in specific locations such as an orchard, a forest or surrounding parks. The company will unveil these inhabited spaces shortly before its research periods. This will enable the public, keen on in situ creation, to observe the work in progress.

A PICTURED RETURN TO UNFOLD | 16 perspectives

Arguably the most ambitious project of our autumn 2023 season, the transmission and adaptation of UNFOLD | 7 perspectives for an ensemble of 16 graduating dancers from Département de danse de l’UQAM was an outstanding public event. The choreographer has also been a professor at UQAM since 2012.

This major pedagogical project demonstrated the importance of transmitting a work from her recent repertoire to a new generation of artists. Performer-teachers Myriam Arseneault and Jean-Benoit Labrecque also shared their own experience of the work, which will be premiered in 2019 as part of the Festival TransAmériques. Many thanks to the Département de danse for supporting this initiative as part of its training program for dance artists.
