Soulèvement

2025

WORLD PREMIERE AT USINE C
OCTOBER 16, 17, 18, 2025

A key figure in Quebec dance, Danièle Desnoyers presents atypical projects, many of which have been realized abroad. These multiple artistic encounters, developed in other socio-political contexts, provided the backdrop against which her new creation SOULÈVEMENT would develop.

This performance bears the stamp of a vital élan, a dance at once primal and avidly complex, where joy becomes an act of resistance. Eight women come together in a scenic vortex from which emerge a multiplicity of bodies and sensibilities, reflecting their identity with aplomb. This project explores in depth the relationship between their dancing bodies and music. The artist invests the abyssal repertoire of the composer Richard Wagner, sparking a dialogue between excerpts from his orchestral works and the electroacoustic soundscapes of Montreal composer Ben Shemie.

“We’re not interested in the context of Wagner’s emergence, his romanticism or his ideals, but rather in how we react to him today. We investigate the forces at work within us in the presence of this music-ghost. How do these women react to the representation of these heightened emotions? What does it bring out in them, how does this music move through them? […] If everything in this piece is made of flesh, the music, both pulsating and visceral, aims to reach the spectator’s senses in a different way.”
